Mikali Holsteins heifer takes dairy crown at Berkshire show

More than 60,000 visitors attended this year’s Berkshire Show to see a range of attractions as well as the 2,000 animals on display. Olivia Midgley reports from the two-day event in Newbury.

It was a foggy start to the 106th Berkshire Show but the sunshine burnt through in time for the start of the interbreed championships, where hundreds of exhibitors battled it out in the livestock lines.

A fourth calver owned by large animal vet David Coombes’ Mikali Holsteins herd, took the dairy interbreed honours on day one of the two day event.

Mikali Goldwyn Belle, sired by Braedale Goldwyn and out of Newnton Shottle Belle, runs with six other show cows which are milked at Mr Coombes’ farm in Avon.

She is giving 40kg per day. Judge Ashely Fleming said the cow was ‘beautiful in rib’ and ‘very correct’.

In reserve was a two and a half year old Ayrshire heifer owned by Padworth-based Angus Hodge and exhibited by Nathan Simpson.

Brocas Lands Obliqee beat off competition in the ’any other coloured’ dairy championship from 17 month old Jubilee Legacy Ceres owned by Jubilee Jerseys.

Obliqee is giving 35kg per day.

In the beef lines it was a Limousin from W.J. and M. Mash based at Torrington Farm in Chesham, Buckinghamshire which took the red ribbons.

September-2012 born Brockhurst Heavenly is sired by Wilodge Vantastic and out of the hugely successful Brockhurst Bolshoi who retired from the show circuit last year.

In reserve was a January-2013 born Charolais heifer owned by Andrew and Beth White, Dorset.

Balbithan Iona is by Chunal Dougie and is out of Balbithan Dixie. She was National Charolais Show champion earlier this year and was named reserve female champion at Bath and West.

Deciding on the sheep interbreed title was ‘difficult and very close’ between the top two sheep, according to judge David Tuffney from Newark.

Mr Tuffney eventually chose a Southdown shearling ewe owned by Kathryn Wheeler, Stow-on-the-Wold. Out of a Golden Valley ewe, she was bought as a ewe lamb from Daniel Bunting, Hertfordshire, who has just sold his flock.

Reserve place went to a December-2014 born home bred Hampshire Down ram lamb from Jon and Justine Barnard, Stalbridge, Dorset.

The lamb is sired by Higher Grawley Larkin and out of a home bred ewe. The couple run 101 ewes.

Chppenham based breeders Muddylane Pedigree Saddlebacks were crowned pig interbreed champions with their 2014-born British Saddleback gilt Muddylane Lucy 22.

The reserve rosette went to Alan Rose’s Maddaford Nancy 46, the winning gilt from the ’any modern breed’ category.
