A new breed record of 18,000gns was set for a Herdwick ram at the Keswick show and sale on behalf of the Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association at Cockermouth.
The record breaker was the pre-sale show champion, a shearling ram from Anthony Hartley, Turner Hall, Seathwaite, which sold to Denis Hodgkiss, Strathaven.
The previous record of 10,000gns was achieved twice. Firstly, for the first prized aged ram from George Harryman, Hawkshead, which also sold to Mr Hodgkiss. Then 10,000gns again for a shearling ram from K. Wrathall, Cockley Beck purchased by D. Harrison, Boot.
Herdwick females sold to £800/head for a pen of five from Messrs Bland, Wigton, which were knocked down to J.E. Grant, Easingwold. The champion pen of ewes from the same home sold for £520/head.
The winning shearling ewes from Mr Harryman made £500/head.
