Ag experts recognised in Queen's New Year Honours List

A Founding member of Red Tractor Assurance has been honoured with a CBE for his contribution to the British food and farming industry.

 

Chief executive of the assured food standards David Clarke was recognised in the 2018 Queen’s New Year Honours with the highest order of the British Empire honour the Queen can bestow.

 

Mr Clarke headed up the scheme for 17 years since its launch in 2000 and it came as the final leg of his 50-year stint in food and farming roles.

 

He said: “Providing people with safe, nutritious and affordable food is an enterprise with fundamental importance and it has been a privilege to work in food and farming for nearly five decades.

 

“My position with the Red Tractor scheme in the latter part of my career was especially rewarding.

“I think this honour only serves to underline the importance of this national initiative to ensure good standards of production across the UK supply chain from farm to retail shelf.”

 

It came as Dr Tina Barsby, chief executive of Cambridge-based crop science organisation NIAB, was awarded an OBE for services to agricultural science and biotechnology.

 

‘Great honour’

The plant geneticist was praised for her scientific achievements since her appointment with the organisation in 2008.

 

“This award is a great honour for me and a tribute to all the colleagues I have worked with across the industry over the years,” she said.

 

“Every day I am inspired by the work being carried out at NIAB and the essential contribution we are making to help our industry fulfil its potential in food production.”

 

Ronald Knight of Knight Farm Machinery Ltd was also recognised for his services to agricultural engineer entrepreneurship and charitable fundraising.
