THE Simmental bull, Heathbrow Important, took the continental male championship on the way to claiming the supreme beef title at Royal Norfolk Show.

Home-bred by David and Lesley Sapsed, Hitchin, the April 2017-born polled son of Heathbrow Grand Slam out of Heathbrow Sarah’s Elegance has already been inter-breed champion at Hertfordshire and Suffolk shows this season.

The judge, Andrew Anderson from Scotland said his champion had outstanding breed character and was very high in all the traits he wanted in a bull, with power, length and very good on its legs.

Standing reserve overall was the continental female champion, Balbithan Nancy, a February 2017-born Charolais heifer from Darren Knox, Colchester. By Davally Illusion and now in-calf to Gretnahouse Juror, it was reserve inter-breed champion at Suffolk Show.

The Aberdeen-Angus champion, Shadwell Evolution T003, a 22-month-old bull from Shadwell Estate Company, Thetford, was crowned native male champion, with the reserve Aberdeen-Angus champion, Liley Kinannie, a three-year-old cow from Marsden Farms, Penistone, taking the native female championship. These two then went on to take the inter-breed pairs championship and then along with Tofts Polly Perkins L777 from Melview Farming, Dymock, claimed the inter-breed team of three award.

Royal Norfolk hosted the British Simmental National show with the overall and female championship going to Sacombe Dandelion Oma, a seven-year-old cow by Clonagh World Class, a previous winner of the Burke Trophy, out of Sacombe Vivienne Oma from J.A. and B.A. Borlase, Hertfordshire.

Reserve female from the same exhibitors was the 15-month-old heifer, Sacombe Hawaii’s Jessica, the first calf out of the breed’s female record holder, Sterling Barcardi’s Hawaii.

Male champion was the aforementioned Heathbrow Important with the reserve male title going to Scotland Hill Juggernaut, a 17-month-old bull from Tom Hill and Ruby Wright, Doncaster.

Dairy

The dairy supreme went to the Holstein champion, Onco Art Mandy, a second calver by Mr Audrey Observer from the Billings family, Dartford. Currently giving 60kg and back in-calf again, it was also inter-breed champion at Suffolk Show.

The Jersey champion, Moonshine Guapo Java, a fourth calver by Yellow Briar Heaths Guapo giving 32kg from Moonshine Jerseys, Beccles, was reserve.

Sheep

Mary Higgins from Wales chose the Southdown champion, Offham Prince Caspian, a home-bred shearling ram from Lizzy Sargent, Battle, as the inter-breed sheep champion. By a Ridings ram, it was also inter-breed champion at Heathfield.

Taking the reserve champion rosette, was Peter Longdin, Doncaster, who was competing at the show for the first time, with his Texel champion, a home-bred shearling ram. By Wellingley Whiskey Galore, owned in partnership with Phil Weaver, it will be sold at the Northern Area Texel sale at Skipton in September.

Pigs

Concluding a good day for the family, Mrs Sargent’s sister, Gussie Harmer, claimed the pig inter-breed title with Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer’s September 2018-born Welsh boar, Offham Ted 5. By Tates Ted 53, its litter sister was inter-breed champion at Devon County.

The judge, Steve Loveless, Dorset, said his champion was an extremely powerful boar and just the right type for the commercial market.

In reserve spot was Breckles Grandeur 18, a January 2019-born Large Black gilt by Breckles Majestic Eagle 3 from local exhibitor, P.E. Churchyard and Son, Norwich.
