Bulls in the spotlight at Hereford show and sale

PEDIGREE Herefords sold to 8,200gns twice with a record bull average of £4,321.15and a clearance rate of 72 per cent at the breed society sale at Hereford on Tuesday.

Bulls in the spotlight at Hereford show and sale

Joint sale leader at 8,200gns from J.R.B. Wilson, Kelso, was the September 2016-born bull, Romany 1 Poseidon BL P5, by Barwise 1 Lancer and out of Romany 1 Lily D1 K27. In the top five per cent of the breed for eye muscle and intermuscular fat levels, it was bought by D. Manduell, Seascale, Cumbria.


Making the same money from T.D. and W.T. Livesey, Normanton le Heath, was Normanton 1 Perky, an August 2016-born son of the Australian bull, Days Calibre G74 out of Normanton 1 Fistunlina. In the top two per cent for both terminal and self-replacing indexes, it was knocked down to R.P. Mann, Ufton, Warwickshire.

The Hereford Cattle Society reserve bull of the year for 2017, Rempstone 1 Even Money E429 by Aldersley 1 Edgar which had been champion at Hertfordshire, Royal Norfolk and Edenbridge shows in 2017 sold for 7,000gns. Consigned by M. Ludgate, Thame, it was knocked down to M. Shaw, Kirkby Moorside, Yorkshire.

 

Reserve junior and reserve overall male champion was Romany 1 Prince BL P41, another by Barwise Lancer from Messrs Wilson. It sold for 6,600gns to G. Hall, Pinmore Herefords, Lancashire.

 

The junior and grand male champion 18-month-old Solpoll 1 Pogba by Panmure 1 Henry out of Christies Amber Keno from J. and W. McMordie, Ballygowan, Northern Ireland sold for 6,500gns to the Stratfield Saye herd, Reading.

 

Top female price was 3,500gns for the reserve female champion, Fisher 1 Clover from Sussex breeders, W.J. Hutchings and Sons, bought by Twose Farms, Whitland, Carmarthenshire.

The grand female champion, 13-month-old Moorside 1 Poppy, by Moorside 1 Montgomery, from G. and M.C. Shepherd, Preston, sold for 3,000gns to M. Jordan, Chathill, Northumberland.


The for sale only female section topped at 2,600gns for a heifer from J.A. Pudge, Herefordshire, Black Hall 1 Shara, which sold to Leverington Herefords, Sleaford.

Averages – 26 bulls, £4,321.15; 17 for sale only females, £1,442.21; 14 females, £2,602.50.
