The Met Office said a prolonged cold period through February and into March was likely.
Bursts of snow have peppered the ground across the UK today exactly 55 years after ‘the snowiest day of the snowiest winter’ of the 20th Century.
Forecasters at the Met Office said temperatures were struggling to rise above freezing and farmers and rural workers should prepare for a ‘prolonged cold period’.
Clare Nasir, Met Office meteorologist said: “In the countryside, under starry skies, temperatures could actually dip as low as -6C.”
The weather experts said this week was expected to be the coldest week of the winter so far with predicted lows of -14C before the weekend.
Taking to twitter earlier this morning, the Met Office said: “There is snow forecast today but #OnThisDay in 1963 it was the snowiest day of the snowiest winter of the 20th Century.
“The winter of 1962-63 was one of the coldest on record; a blizzard lasting 32 hours buried parts of the UK under five feet of snow, with drifts as high as 20-feet.”
