The NFU has called on industry bodies to treat the campaigns as a wakeup call
High profile vegan campaigns against the dairy industry need to be a wakeup call, according to NFU dairy board chairman Michael Oakes.
He called on industry bodies to unite to tackle the campaigns with information on the nutritional benefits of dairy and animal welfare.
“There is loads of good stuff about dairy. We need to be more positive,” he said.
Advertisements from Go Vegan World (GVW) caused anger when they appeared in The Sunday Telegraph in February, as well as on billboards and signs round the country. The adverts claim ‘humane milk is a myth’ and ‘dairy takes babies from their mothers’.
Mr Oakes said he was ‘appalled’ at the newspaper and it was ‘demoralising’ for dairy farmers.
“It makes you angry. We are really conscious of welfare. The way we look after them is key. The last thing we want is any animal suffering. It portrays us in a really poor way which does not reflect our membership.”
