Farm leaders slam failure to put food at heart of Agriculture Bill

In April this year, Mr Gove admitted to Farmers Guardian that he had neglected food production in the development of post-Brexit policy, but little seems to have been done to rectify the problem.

The NFU and TFA warned a lack of measures to improve competitiveness, tackle volatility and fix serious problems in the supply chain meant the legislation had ‘fallen well short’ of what was required.

“Along with other farmers I will also be looking to the Bill to set out means to address the clear market failure in the food chain which means farmers are not rewarded fairly for the risk and investment they make.

“If British farmers are to underpin the nation’s food security, they will need the right financial and policy framework to do so in a competitive and volatile global marketplace.”

TFA chief executive George Dunn added: “We support the plans for a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, but it needs to be balanced with serious effort to work collaboratively with the farming industry to raise productivity through planned investment into farm infrastructure, skills and market development.”

Both groups also demanded environmental and animal welfare standards be protected in international trading relationships.
