Farmer Andrew RT Davies steps down as leader of Welsh Conservatives

Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and active farmer Andrew RT Davies has announced he is stepping down.

Leader of Welsh Conservatives, farmer Andrew RT Davies, steps down

Mr Davies did not give a reason for his shock resignation, though he has been criticised in recent weeks by members of his own party for suggesting companies such as Airbus were guilty of ‘hyperbole’ in their warnings about Brexit.

 

He had also thrown his weight behind the failed Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project.

 

In his resignation letter, he said: “I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Conservative Group as an AM and advancing the cause of Welsh Conservative policies and initiatives across Wales.”

Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies has been appointed interim leader, and is widely expected to win the permanent job, with one Tory AM telling BBC Wales there would be a ‘coronation’.
