NFU mutual has launched a free health and safety service to help farmers protect themselves and farm workers from Covid-19 during the challenging harvest period.
The service is made up of an 85-strong field force of health and safety experts and will provide guidance to thousands of farmers and businesses across the UK.
Farmers can make a request online to get a call back from a consultant to discuss Covid-19 related business issues and it includes a host of online resources available to download, related to maintaining social distancing measures at work.
Delivered by NFU Mutual’s Risk Management Services (RMS), Ian Jewitt, RMS managing director, said: “Farmers are under intense pressure to keep the nation fed and desperately need specific information on how they can keep themselves, their families, employees and customers safe from coronavirus during the busiest time in the farming year.”
Mr Jewitt warned the need for extra workers during the harvest, alongside businesses providing their services in new ways from offering drive-through farm shops, presented ‘huge challenges’ for health and safety.
He said: “The new RMS Covid-19 service connects farmers to real specialists who can listen to concerns and provide practical solutions to these challenges.”
With fears farming’s poor safety record could be exacerbated by the pandemic, Mr Jewitt urged agribusinesses to take advantage of the service to get customers ‘back on their feet and put them in the safest position for the future’.
