Former dairy farmer Neil Parish has been re-elected chairman of the EFRA select committee with 57 per cent of the votes cast by his fellow MPs.
Working as a Member of the European Parliament for ten years, Mr Parish had multiple dealings with the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, during his time in Brussels.
He told Farmers Guardian he intends to open an inquiry into post-Brexit agricultural trade, looking at how future deals should recognise the importance of food and farming and who will be negotiating for the UK when talks are being carried out.
Other topics Mr Parish is keen for the committee to cover include simplification of regulation and stewardship and access to labour throughout the supply chain.
Delighted
He said: “I am delighted to have been re-elected as chairman of the EFRA committee.
“The coming months are crucial for Defra in preparing for the Brexit negotiations. My committee has a vital role to play.
“I look forward to working with colleagues across the House to hold the Government’s feet to the fire on issues such as Brexit preparations, post-Brexit agricultural policy and air quality.
“I am keen to continue our work listening to the concerns of rural communities and stakeholders in the agricultural and environmental sectors to make sure their voices are heard in parliament.”
