History made at Great Yorkshire Show as Dutch Spotted takes sheep supreme

HISTORY was made when a Dutch Spotted sheep claimed the supreme championship at the Great Yorkshire Show, after first being crowned shortwool/lowland champion.

The champion was a two-crop ewe which had been imported as a lamb from Holland, from Ali Jackson’s Tiptop flock, Annan, and shown by his fiancée, Hannah Sloan. This was its show ring debut but it will head to the Royal Welsh next.

Judge, Roderick Runciman, Galashiels, said: “Immaterial of breed a champion has to be correct and have breed character and this sheep just oozes character. It also has a great top and head and is good on its legs.”

Standing reserve was the terminal breed champion and Texel champion, a ewe lamb from Proctors Farm, Wray, Lancaster, shown by flock manager, Jeff Aiken.

By 100,000gns Sportsmans Batman out of a ewe by Teiglum Young Gun, it was second at the Royal Highland Show.

Staverton Arnie, a two-year-old Dorset Horn ram from father and son, Richard and Jack Fitton’s Dynamite flock, Bolton, took the reserve shortwool/lowland championship. Bought from breeder, Tim Pratt, at the May Fair at Exeter, it was being shown for the first time.

The reserve terminal breed championship rosette went to the Charollais champion from Russell Gray’s Langside flock, Lanark. This was home-bred one-crop ewe by Oakchurch Ozil, which was also a winner at the Royal Highland Show.

For the second year running the Longwool championship went to Adrian Helm and Pam Morrish, Middlesbrough. This year it was with Tunstall Lola, a home-bred gimmer hogg in wool, which won supreme fleece at Otley Show.

Reserve in this section went to the Leicester Longwool champion, a home-bred gimmer hogg in wool from Gillian Shipley’s Oxgang flock, Driffield, which was started by her father, Alan Aconley, 42 years ago.

Hownam Grange Victoria, a two-crop home-bred North Country Cheviot Park ewe from Jimmy and Willie Thomson, Kelso, claimed the hill breed championship. By Wandylaw Scrumpy Jack, it was reserve female champion at the show last year and reserve inter-breed champion at the Royal Highland this season.

A home-bred Kerry Hill shearling ewe gave Andrew Fisher, Harrogate, his second breed championship in a row before going on to take the reserve hill breed title.

Commercial female champion was the Mule champion, a home-bred gimmer lamb by the home-bred ram, Hewness L1 from Kevin Wilson, Otley.
