Holstein is overall champion of first online agricultural show

Ambrosia took 21 per cent of the votes against six other inter-breed winners to be named best in show at the inaugural Greatest Online Agricultural Show.

Owned by Phil, Sandra and Stephen Harris, Bodmin, Cornwall, the cow was bred from an embryo bought form the McLean family’s Priestland herd, Northern Ireland.

By Gillette Windbrook, Ambrosia calved with its second calf in January and was shown giving 55 litres a day at 4.1 per cent fat and 2.99 per cent protein.

Having previously placed second as a calf at the Cornwall calf qualifier in 2017 she went on to stand sixth at the All Breeds All Britain calf show later that year.

Its dam, Priestland Goldwyn Ambrosia, which is classified EX95, was the heifer champion at the royal Ulster Winter Fair in 2012 and traces back to the renowned Tri-Day Ashlyn.

Reserve best in show, Portbredy Lena 1377.

In a very close second place, taking 211 votes to the Holstein’s 215, was the pig champion, Portbredy Lena 1377 from Oliver Giles, West Sussex.

The Duroc sow was bought from Hayley Loveless, Dorset, as a gilt in 2017 and is now part of Mr Giles’ Tedfold herd of Durocs, Middle Whites and Saddlebacks.

The sow by Seaborough Raw Deal is out of Portbredy Lean 1230 and was born in 2016. She has had five litters to date the last of which was in January this year.

As well as amassing a number of breed championships over her career, Lena was also named reserve female in the modern breeds section of the Pig of the year competition in 2017 and one of her daughters was reserve young pig of the year in 2019.
