National Young Farmers Week (September 18-24) is here – a week which celebrates all things YFC!
The National Federation of Young Farmers Club (NFYFC) is an organisation run by young people, for young people who share a love for agricultural and rural living.
Unlike the name hints, you don’t have to be a ‘young farmer’ to be in a YFC and signing up to your local club can change your life forever as you gain friends for life whilst having a whole lot of fun.
To celebrate the week, aspiring agri-journalist and young farmer Hannah Binns has identified some of the best things about being part of a YFC!
Young farmers have a notorious party hard reputation and it isn’t hard to see why.
Each regional hosts their own throughout the year – Barn Boogie by Pendle YFC and Boxing Day Do by Clitheroe YFC being personal favourites of mine.
And don’t get me started on the crazy weekend that is the AGM!
It's the highlight of the YFC calendar for members. More than 5,000 young farmers from across England and Wales gather together to celebrate being part of one of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK.
So, grab your selfie stick, remember your fancy dress costumes and get ready to sing 'Country Roads' at the top of your voice.
Quite literally, as NFYFC offers a range of trips both across the U.K and further afield for its members.
Whether you fancy skiing, club exchanging, shearing sheep in New Zealand or volunteering in South Africa, there is a travel opportunity waiting for everyone.
Slap on your sun-screen and lace up your walking boots and prepare for an adventure of a life-time.
Throughout your time in YFC, you will develop a range of skills as long as your arm, meaning you can talk the ear off the interviewer when they say, ‘tell me about YFC’.
All those hours spent stock-judging have given you strong decision making skills, the ability to communicate in a clear convincing manner, self-confidence and quick thinking.
And all your parents thought you did at YFC was drink…
Competitions at both regional and national level offer young farmers a chance to show off their talents as well as meet new people with similar interests.
Whether this involves necking a pint of gravy, dancing around in a cow onesie or baking a mean banana loaf, there is a competition for everyone to get involved in whilst having a lot of fun!
Forget Naked Attraction and Take Me Out, the NFYFC is an age-old dating agency that has withstood the test of time.
Known by many for setting up couples through its variety of social events, you’ll begin to develop more than friendships with people who have similar interests and backgrounds to you!
The longer you are involved with YFC, the more club tops you acquire!
The wittier the slogan, the better.
But remember, YFC club shirts bearing offensive wording or graphics aren't allowed at the annual AGM.
You'll just have to wear them on the farm - the livestock won't mind. But your grandparents might...
You may think YFCs spend each week stood in a wet field looking at sheep but each club hosts a varied schedule to suit everyone’s interests.
From pumpkin carving, talks by charities such as R.A.B.I to matches of tennis, each week is different and you always get to try something new alongside your friends!
