Native South Devon takes inter-breed beef honours

The May 2017-born heifer was bred by Richard Hartshorn, Telford who has been exhibiting at Shropshire show for 30 years and has never won the inter-breed championship.

The heifer was second in its class at Beef Expo earlier in the week and is by Z Eyton Trusty 3 and out of a home-bred cow which was breed champion at the Royal Cheshire Show as a two-year-old. The heifer will be shown at the South Devon’s national show at the Royal Welsh Show in July and will attend several local shows.

 

The overall reserve title went to the commercial champion, Black Beauty, a British Blue cross heifer from T. Jones, Llanrwst. The heifer by Littleburn Frisky is out of a Limousin cow and was bought privately from John Smith Jackson, Leyburn. It is part of Mr Jones’ herd of 35 commercial, Limousin and Welsh Black cows and was first in its class at Beef Expo.

The reserve native champion was the Hereford champion, Hollyvale 1 June 3 from Allen Massey, Bury, Lancashire. The home-bred, 13-month-old heifer is by Dendor 1 Leroy and out of Greenyards 1 June, a Ford Abbey 1 Energy cow which was bred by P.J. and A.C. Allman, Herefordshire.

 

Taking the honours in the continental inter-breed was the British Blue champion, Hawthorn Blues Midnight Melody, a May 2017-born heifer by Attribute Du Fond De Bois. The home-bred heifer from S. Hughes, Newtown is out of Dragon Blues Jane, which was bought at Carlisle five-years-ago for 2,600gns. Midnight Melody is one of two British Blues which reside in Mr Jones’ 40-strong herd of suckler cows and was supreme champion at Newport Show last year.

 

The reserve continental champion was the Charolais champion, Teme Nude, from Vince and Eva Corbett, Knighton. The home-bred heifer by home-bred bull, Teme Lunar and out of a home-bred cow, Teme Ivory.

In the rare and minority breeds inter-breed, the Traditional Hereford lifted the trophy, this was the first win at Shropshire show for Patrick Lynn, Nottinghamshire with in-calf heifer, Hockerwood Lucy. Due to calve in August Mr Lynn bought its mother, Albany Linda from Les Cook, Cambridgeshire. By Boresisle Lawrence, the heifer was named breed champion at the Welsh Spring Festival already this season and will head to the Three Counties Show next.

 

In reserve was the Red Poll champion, Pinguis Frederick, a March 2015-born bull by Nobodys Eclipse, from J.R. Williams, Telford.

Four animals caught the eye of judge, Johnathan Long, and were pulled forward into the shortlist in the sheep inter-breed, but taking the supreme honours was the Charollais champion.

 

This was a shearling ewe from Percy Tait, Worcestershire. This was the second inter-breed win for the ewe which also took the honours at the North Somerset show earlier in the month. The shearling was an embryo bought from the Wedderburn dispersal sale and is by Rhaeadr Popeye and out of a Parkgate ewe.

The reserve champion was a Border Leicester ewe lamb which was the any other rare or traditional breed champion, bred and owned by 13-year-old Dan Grinnall, Worcestershire. Mr Grinnall owns the Haydan flock of Border Leicesters and this is only his second year in the show ring. It was the first time out for the ewe lamb which is heading to the tree counties show next.

Also pulled out in the shortlist was the Lleyn champion, from John Hamer’s Daywell flock, Oswestry. The home-bred shearling ewe is by a tup bought in from Wynne Davis’ Bronallt flock, Morfa Nefyn.

 

The final champion in the shortlist was the Texel champion, a shearling ewe from Robert Bennett, Welshpool, who also took the reserve Texel title with another shearling ewe. The home-bred ewe is by home-bred tup, Plasucha Aberfeldy.

Leading the charge in the dairy ring was the Holstein champion, Hawksmoor Rene 50 from Seaton Farms, Audlem. The third-calved cow by Regancrest Mac Bedford is classified EX91 and calved in October. The cow was bought from the dispersal of Robert Clare’s Hawksmoor herd at Beeston in October 2018 and is currently yielding 70kg a day.

Following in reserve was the Jersey champion, Rapid Bay-UK Liquor JG Panama, from James and Nicky Hudson and Beth Starkey, Nantwich. The third-calved cow by Rapid Bay-UK Liquor is classified EX93 and was bought in the Rapid Bay-UK dispersal sale in 2016. It calved in January and is currently giving 28kg a day.
