Nova leads saturated Westmorland beef lines

Relentless rain did little to dampen the spirits of exhibitors at this year’s Westmorland County Show, who continued to turn-out a quality show of stock in the unforgiving conditions.

It was certainly a day to remember for the Parthenaise in the beef section, exhibiting in what was thought to be the breeds first section in its own right in the UK before James Duerden’s heifer, Killerwick Nova, went onto top the beef line-up in the inter-breed championship.

The two-year-old resides with what is now a herd of 20 breeding females plus followers, established by Mr Duerden and his family six years ago in Dalton-in-Furness.

By French sire, Faussett, and dam, Fillette, Nova is currently in-calf to Killerwick Lancelot.

Standing reserve was the Limousin champion, Mystyle Nandini, from W. Richardson and Son, Dufton.

By Carnew Lionheart and out of Aultside Lambrini, Nandini stood reserve breed champion at this years Great Yorkshire show as well as overall champion three times in one week at Leyburn, Kinsley and Dufton shows this year.

Taking the championship in the Highland section, in what was also the breed’s national show, was Ban-I-Arla Morag 9 of Blairlogan, from Blairlogan Highlanders, Clackmannanshire.

Brought out by Dexter Logan, the two-year-old heifer by Logan of Muingairigh stood breed champion at the Great Yorkshire as well as several local shows including Stirling and Drymen this year.

Also taking place was Belted Galloways national show, in which the three-year-old bull, Waveney Harnser, from David and Nicola Chapman, Norfolk was tapped out as breed champion.

By Southfield Sonnyboy, it resides alongside their 60-head herd.

Leading the dairy section in the individual inter-breed judging was the Holstein champion, Crossrigg Fremont Roxy, from John Harrison, Cliburn.

A Duckett-SA Fremont daughter, it was shown giving 40kg daily having calved with its fourth in March.

Classified EX94, Roxy is a thirteenth generation VG or EX cow and took top honours at the Western Holstein Club show two years ago as a second calver and more recently inter-breed dairy champion at Penrith show this year.

The Ayrshire champion, Troutbeck Burdette Jess 3, was tapped out as reserve.

From Phillip and James Mattinson’s herd near Wigton, this EX95 fifth calver by Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette was shown giving 40kg having calved in February.

The highly regarded Burke trophies were also among the prize list at this year’s show, awarded to the Ayrshires in the dairy section.

In what proved to be an excellent day for the Mattinson brothers, they clinched the award with two home-bred cows, their champion and its herd-mate, Troutbeck Buster Irene, a VG89 Marleycote Buster daughter.

In the beef section, the Burke trophy was awarded to the Herefords, a pair of April-2018 born heifers, Hollyvale 1 June 3, from A. and P. Massey, Bury, and Pinmoor 1 Raptor, from G. Hall, Knowsley.

In the sheep rings, Peter Woof, Stainton, took the lowland terminal championship for a second year running with another Texel gimmer shearling.

Sired by Eden Valley A1 and out of a home-bred year, it took the title on what was its first outing this year.

Reserve was the Charollais champion from Jonathan and David Norman, Cockermouth.

The two-year-old ewe by Carnew Nijinsky was the sale leader at the Parkgate dispersal in October 2017, where it was bought as a ewe lamb for 3,000gns.

In the lowland non-terminal section, a Zwartbles gimmer lamb from Jess Lambert, Garsdale, was tapped out as champion.

Home-bred by Top Notch Ferdinand and out of Selside Domino, the victory topped off a successful season, having taken the inter-breed title at several local shows on the circuit this summer.

Reserve went to a Mule shearling from Richard Batty, Selside.

Bred by Brian Knowles, Selside, it was bought from the Stars in Their Eyes sale at Junction 36 last year, and also stood champion at Cartmel show this year.

Overall upland champion was the North Country Cheviot champion from C.L. I’Anson, Marrick.

The home-bred shearling ewe is by a Stephen Dodsworth tup, Ulverston, and resides with the families 17-head North Country Cheviot flock which they keep alongside mainly Bluefaced Leicesters and Scottish Blackfaces.

In reserve was a Rough Fell gimmer shearling from Brian and Jane Knowles, Selside.

By the 10,000gns High Cark Yankie, it also stood overall champion at Bentham show, as well as breed champion at the Great Yorkshire and Grayrigg shows this year.
