With high yielding varieties we were selecting for septoria and relying on a multi-site to get us out.”

However, she acknowledged strides had been made in breeding for better septoria resistance and said this was not valued enough.

Prof Burnett also questioned the need for so many pesticide applications. “We have T minus, T0, T1.5, T4s and they are not all necessary.

“There is also a perception that reducing doses is irresponsible in terms of resistance management but this is not the case. In 70 [scientific] papers the evidence shows reduced doses are helpful.”
