The winner was Sacombe Dandelion OMA, a seven-year-old cow from Judith and Bridget Borlase, Hertfordshire.

Shown by stockman Jimmy McMillan, the home-bred cow is by one of Sacombe’s past herd sires Clonagh World Class, winner of the Burke Trophy in 2012, and out of Sacombe Vivienne Oma which is a Rosten Pluto daughter.

It was shown with its April-born bull calf at foot, Sacombe Kite, which is by Blackford Hurricane 16, a stock bull purchased for 9,000gns from Stirling Bull Sales in 2018.

Taking the overall and female championship at the Simmental National show at the Royal Norfolk this year, Dandelion took the Royal Welsh title on what was only its second outing on the circuit this season.

It will be heading to Edenbridge and Oxted Agricultural Show next, on what will be its final outing of the season.

Reserve

Standing reserve in the individual supreme beef line-up and adding to its already impressive line-up of wins was the Blonde three-year-old cow, Doncombe Madhu, from from David and Sue Knight, Bristol.

Marking the highest ever placing for the pair at the Royal Welsh show, Madhu was shown with its January-born first calf at foot, Doncombe Param by their stock bull, Doncombe Mulungu, which had taken the Blonde male championship at the show earlier in the day.

Home-bred by the French bull Aramis and out of Doncombe Ishtar, the January-2016 born cow stood reserve continental in the Three Counties inter-breed line-up this year having taken the overall championship at the same show the previous year.

It also reigned supreme in the inter-breed line-up at Bath and West in 2018, after taking reserve at Devon County earlier that year.

The inter-breed judge, Jack Henry, Yorkshire, also tapped out the Charolais champion in his final four. This was Bassett Nadia, an April 2017-born heifer from Rachel Wylie and Richard Hassle, Banbury.

Bred by Jean Atkinson, Thorpe Basset, the two-year-old heifer by Harestone Domino, out of Basset Ursula, was bought privately as a yearling and is now in-calf to Westcarse Houdini.

Currently residing with Richard and Carol Rettie, Clackmannanshire, Nadia stood champion in the Charolais national show, held at the Great Yorkshire earlier this month.

The Aberdeen-Angus held their national show at the Welsh fixture, and their champion, Shadwell Evolution T003, a September-2017 born bull from the Shadwell Estate company, Thetford, was also tapped out in the inter-breed final four.

An embryo calf by Retties JFK M195, its dam, Shadwell Evora M618, took the same national show title in 2014 as a two-year-old heifer.

The 22-month-old bull was native male champion as well as being one half of the winning inter-breed pairs at the Royal Norfolk this year as well as the junior inter-breed champion at the Great Yorkshire and breed champion at Lincolnshire.

It was also the national show for the South Devon breed, and their winner was the 2015-born Grove Brutus 151 from Douglas Scott, Gloucestershire, on its first major show outing this season.

Shown by stockman Chris Richens, the home-bred bull is by Lumbylaw Magnus 15 and is one of four current stock bulls in the Grove herd. He will head to Moreton-in-Marsh show next.

Native Welsh Black champion, Brysgaga Berwyn, from Ken Ellis A’i Feibion, Tywyn, was tapped out in the inter-breed final eight on what was its second show ring outing.

The April-2014 born bull by Penwernhir Seraff is out of Caerynwch Molly 96 and was bought privately by the family as a six-month-old from Rowland Rees, Aberystwyth. It will be shown locally for the remainder of this season.

Three more were involved in the judges final eight, including the Hereford champion, Auckvale 1 Curly, a January-2018 born heifer from L. and L. Bowen, Gelligaer.

Another was the Salers champion, Preenbank Neddy, a home-bred January-2018 born bull from Fred and Bryn Robinson, Shropshire, on what was its first outing this season.

This was followed by the Limousin, Foxhillfarm Naomi, from Michael and Melanie Alford, Cullompton, a two-year-old Limousin heifer sired by Trueman Jagger.

Commercial champion went to John Williams, Blaenau, for the first time at the show with his home-bred Limousin sired heifer, One And Only.

The baby beef championship was taken by No Frills, a home-bred January-2018 born Charolais cross from Robin and Leri Roberts, Anglesey, on its first show ring outing.
