Sheep farmer uses alpacas to prevent dog attacks

A sheep farmer has marked the one-year anniversary of what was branded the ‘worst ever’ dog attack by hiring a pair of alpacas to guard his sheep.

Sheep farmer uses alpacas to prevent dog attacks #FGtakethelead

The decision came just over a year after a dog killed 116 sheep on Gordon Wyeth’s sheep farm in West Dean, Chichester.

Mr Wyeth lost around £17,000 after the incident on March 9 2016 but is since reported to have lost a further £8,000.

Speaking to the BBC, he said he hoped the alpacas natural ‘herding and protection’ instincts would help protect his sheep from stray dogs and other predators.

Shepherd Liz Rough said: “The alpacas are introduced in to the flock and anything not on a lead with a person, the alpacas will run towards and scare away from the sheep.

“Their natural instincts when put with sheep is to guard them, and protect and look after.”

Alpacas have been championed for their natural instinct to guard after a turkey farm in Berkshire used a similar tactic to prevent fox attacks.

Mr Wyeth said he now struggled to find insurance for dog attacks on his livestock.
