Neil Parish, former chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, has said he intends to make a trade inquiry the main focus of the committee if he is re-elected to the post by his fellow MPs.

The inquiry would look into how future trade deals should recognise the importance of food and farming and who will be negotiating for the UK when talks are being carried out.

Other topics Mr Parish is keen to cover are simplification of regulation and stewardship schemes and access to labour throughout the food supply chain.

He is hoping to have a short meeting of the committee before the parliamentary recess so the trade inquiry can be launched and a call for evidence issued over summer.

Mr Parish said: “I very much hope I get back in because I enjoy the job and you really can hold Government to account, especially when they have no majority.

“I also like the idea that we put ideas in as well. I am hoping the select committee role with us leaving the EU will become a very important one and the committee can become a conduit between the NFU, the CLA, the TFA, the sheep association, the beef association and try and feed something in to Government.

“If we do not sing from roughly the same hymn sheet, we are not going to get a deal.”
