Woodhayes herd heads South Devon prices with 5,400gns top

THERE was a solid trade of South Devon bulls at the spring breed society sale at Exeter. Twenty-one of the 23 entries found new homes and the male trade averaged £3,647, up £681 on the year.

AI X Woodhayes Homer 24 tops at 5,400gns.

Best bull judged on performance and inspection was the heterozygous polled bull AI X Woodhayes Homer 24, from B.G. and J.Z.A. Dart, Cullompton. By Woodhayes Homer 11 and out of AI Z Woodhayes Daffodil 13, this September 2014-born topped the trade at 5,400gns, to J. Wharton Agriculture, Lincolnshire.

 

Next, at 5,200gns was the male champion, which was tapped out by pre-sale judge Douglas Scott, Moreton-in-Marsh. This was March 2015-born bull Sexton Senator 8 from R.R.B. and S.J. Harvey, Ermington. By Sexton General 43, a grandson of Northwick General 10, it is out of Sexton Snowdrop, and caught the eye of D. Ashcroft, Selborne, Hampshire.

 

Two exhibits hit 5,000gns. The first was Welland Valley Dominator 2, a North View Dominator son from M.E. and T.E. Broome, Leicestershire. March 2015-born and out of Welland Valley Gem 25, it was bought by R. Rundle, Newquay. Also making this price was the reserve male champion, the polled bull Z Treguddick Hallmark 27, from D. J. Thomas and Son, Launceston. Shillingham Farms, Saltash, bought this April 2015-born son of Z Treguddick Poll Progression 8 and Treguddick June 23.

 

R.J. Leach, Payhembury, bought one of a consignment of bulls from P.S. and A.P. Rowe, Liskeard, for 4,800gns. This was paid for Trewint Samuel, a Welland Valley Samson-sired April 2015-born.

 

Female prices were led by the polled heifer Z Carlydnack Sapphire 10, from R. Sadler, Falmouth. This X Billington Excalibur 34 daugther sold for 1,650gns to A. Garrett and Son, Okehampton.

 

The section champion was Z Carlydnack Hawthorn 17 from the same home. Born in May 2015 and also by Excalibur, it sold for 1,600gns to R.D. Gendall, Helston.
