NFU Cymru renews calls for DPOs #teamdairy

Dairy farmers should create dairy producer organisations (DPOs) to give themselves a stronger position in the supply chain, according to NFU Cymru milk board chairman Aled Jones.

Mr Jones also called on farmers to take responsibility and act rather than waiting for the unions, AHDB and Government to do it for them.

Mr Jones has been part of a group of dairy farmers working on their creation across Wales.

He said: “Presently farmers deal on an individual basis with processors, however the use of DPOs would be a far more professional means of operating.

Value

“DPOs have the potential to develop greater value for the whole supply chain with returns shared equally for the long-term financial health of the industry.”

He said the union had ’actively sought to highlight the benefits of DPOs’ but processors saw them as a threat and have stated they will not work with farmers involved.

“Today in the dairy farming sector, collaboration is the key and NFU Cymru sees DPOs as a vital part of developing new relationships in the dairy sector.”
