NFYFC launches training module to encourage the conversation on succession

The module, with help from Savills and Sian Bushell of Sian Bushell Associates, has been devised for YFCs to include in their new 2019-20 club programmes.

Savills food and farming consultant Charles Skelton said the group wanted to help the younger generation of farmers start the conversation on succession.

He said: “Often the whole topic seems too complicated and difficult to sort out so people ignore it, which leads to problems.

“Understanding, unpacking and talking about succession is a great start.”

NFYFC agriculture and rural issues chairman David Goodwin added the training module would help give an insight into why succession was so important, especially to those facing difficult discussions with their families, as well as what could happen if the subject is not broached.

He said: “This is just part of a suite of resources that we have created for our members which includes videos, guides and training.

“We cannot emphasise enough the importance of communication for tackling succession issues.

“It is a new YFC year and timely to consider some of the tough topics that will be so necessary during what has become quite uncertain times.”

Adding to the succession video and guide that were launched last year, the module Ready and Resilient, which is part of NFYFC’s Curve training, aims to highlight succession and:

  • the part communication plays;
  • the process and skills needed to begin the conversation;
  • the positive effects of succession planning within a variety of situations;
  • the consequences of inadequate successfion planning.
