Oat prices on the up

UK spot ex-farm oat prices have risen sharply so far this autumn, according to AHDB Corn Returns.

In October the UK average spot price was £181.50/t, nearly £60.00/t more than in October 2017 and the highest monthly price since May 2013.

This rise in spot prices suggests a squeeze in the availability of the required quality compared to demand. UK oat production is estimated to be 2 per cent lower than in 2017 by Defra, while milling demand in July-September was up nine per cent on the same period last season, according to AHDB senior analyst Helen Plant.

“Demand and trade levels going forward will be key to how prices evolve in the coming weeks and months. The first official UK supply and demand forecasts will be out at the end of this month and will incorporate this data and more,” she says.
