Piers Morgan slams Monbiot for wearing leather as he demands an end to meat-eating

Mr Monbiot’s TV appearance followed a controversial article in The Guardian last week where he said eating meat and dairy would be looked at by future generations in the same way as slavery, the subjugation of women, judicial torture, the murder of heretics, imperial conquest, genocide, World War I and the rise of fascism.

In the piece, he claimed the advent of cheap artificial meat grown in labs would bring about a change comparable to that of the Industrial Revolution.

But Mr Morgan was quick to point out Mr Monbiot’s ‘shameless hypocrisy’ during the GMB interview.

“Where is your watch strap from, is it leather?”, Mr Morgan asked.

“Yes, it is”, replied Mr Monbiot.

Questioned about where leather came from, Mr Monbiot admitted his watch strap came from a cow, and pointed out his shoes were made of the same thing.

Cows’ carcasses

“You are wearing cows’ carcasses on your wrists and your feet”, Mr Morgan fired back.

“So you have got no problem with slaughtering animals as long as it is for your fancy watch and your shoes.

“Do you not think you should be leading from the front George? You are telling us all to give up meat, but you want to kill these animals for your watch and your shoes.

“Some would say that is shameless hypocrisy. Is it not?”

Mr Monbiot rejected the suggestion his watch was ‘fancy’, saying it cost £30, but claimed he was not ‘militant’.

“I am not being 100 per cent purist about this, but I am trying to persuade people to change their habits in quite a radical way”, he added.
