Podehole herd takes Rutland Inter-breed honours

The four-year-old home-bred Podehole Gypsy Game was described by judge Alastair Smith, Nottingham, as an outstanding animal with great locomotion, displaying both pedigree and commercial quality.

Bred by Charles and Sally Horrell, who run a 60-strong herd of pedigree Beef Shorthorn cows in Peterborough, it is a daughter of the 10,000gns bull Chapeltown Clansman. Exhibited with its Royalla Rockstar-sired bull calf at foot, it topped off a great day for the Horrells, who also won the heifer breed class with another home-bred.

n reserve was the continental victor, the Ironstone Brandy-sired Limousin bull Monkey Puzzle Ideal, from Jonathan Lyon, Bourne. This four-year-old was bought privately in January from Wales and has been awarded supreme male titles at Hertford and Woodhall Spa shows this year.

Mr Lyon also secured the commercial championship with the June 2015-born Limousin cross heifer Jasmine. Home-bred and out of a Salomon-sired cow, it has had a successful season so far, taking overall honours at Hartford and Suffolk shows, and was also reserve supreme at the English Winter Fair.

Reserve in the native championship was Oliver Brewin, Thorpe Langton, with the South Devon cow North View Clover. Born in April 2009, it is by Welland Valley Crusader. Second billing in the continental crowning was M. Brown of Beckside British Blues, Normington-on-Trent, with the heifer Chardeney Kazza.

Stephen Parr of Parsons pedigree British Blue herd, Thornby, took the junior beef title with the May 2016-born heifer British Blue heifer Cromwell Lottie. By Almeley Handyman, it was acquired by Mr Parr as a calf and was attending its first show.

SHEEP

In the sheep ring, Nick Page, West Sussex, awarded the overall honours to the home-bred Beltex shearling ewe Beaverview Blue Angel from the 2015 and 2010 inter-breed winners Richard and Rachel Sharp, Grantham, of the Beaverview flock. By Clary Twitter and out of Beaverview Tabitha, it stood breed champion at Suffolk Show.

Reserve choice was the Charollais shearling ewe Dalby Rhianna from Charles Sercombe, Melton Mowbray. Out of a home-bred dam and by Micklehills Odyssey, Rhianna currently holds the title for being the highest indexed shearling ewe in the breed society.
