Prince Philip and Prince Charles pay tribute to food producers and key workers during Covid-19

The Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales are the latest members of the royal family to issue a message to the nation since the country was put into lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.

 

Earlier this month the Queen made only her fifth televised address to tell Britons they would overcome the coronavirus outbreak if they stayed resolute.

Prince Charles, who has recovered after suffering mild symptoms of Covid-19, told Country Life magazine: “What this national crisis has brought home is how much we rely on our agricultural community and all those in the food supply chain from field to fork.

 

“When was the last time anyone gave the availability of a bottle of milk or a loaf of bread, or fresh vegetables a second thought? Suddenly these things are precious and valued. And this is how it should always be."

 

He paid tribute to the nation’s 80,000 farmers, adding, ’we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude’.

 

“Food does not happen by magic. If the past few weeks have proved anything, it is that we cannot take it for granted.”
