Proud British consumers keen to back British agriculture, says new survey

British consumers have admitted they are proud to stand by local produce and support the UK farming sector, a new survey has found.

British consumers keen to back British agriculture #BuyBritish

More than 2000 adults admitted the importance of British farming in the latest NFU Farmer Favourability survey, the first of its kind since the UK’s vote to leave the EU, with 89 per cent of shoppers championing the need for a productive farming industry.

 

When looking for produce, 64 per cent trusted British the most and 66 per cent consciously looked for locally sourced labels.

 

A further 68 per cent backed the need for farmers to receive support to preserve the countryside and produce good food with reasonable prices in equal measure, and 90 per cent thought farming was important to the UK economy.

What the statistics say...

Contribution

  • 68 per cent of people have a favourable or very favourable view of British farming
  • 90 per cent think farming is important to the UK economy
  • 89 per cent think it is important to have a productive farming industry

Role

  • 64 per cent trust British food more than the rest of the world
  • 66 per cent often or always specifically look for British food when shopping

Government support

68 per cent feel farmers should receive support to both produce food and look after the environment in equal measure:

  • 82 per cent agree support should be offered to preserve the countryside
  • 81 per cent agree support should be offered to ensure reasonable food prices

About three quarters of people agree farmers should receive assistance towards:

  • 75 per cent: protecting the environment and dealing with climate change
  • 73 per cent: investing in farm businesses for future generations
  • 73 per cent: ensuring a fair standard of living for farmers

NFU president Meurig Raymond added: “It is clear the public recognise the strategic importance of farming in feeding the country, looking after the countryside and contributing to the economy.

 

“Public support is vital to the British farming industry. It send a strong message to the MPs and decision-makers who have a huge opportunity during Brexit negotiations to create a political environment where farming can really thrive.

 

“This support will be instrumental for the British farming sector in the coming months and years ahead.”
