Quality animals on show at Bucks County

Poor weather in the run up to the show made for some muddy conditions, but it did not dampen spirits at the society’s 148th event. Olivia Midgley reports from the showground at Weedon Park.

It was a case of quality over quantity in the livestock lines as a mixture of bovine TB restrictions and price burdens saw reduced cattle entries at this year’s Buckinghamshire County Show.

But the standard of animals was as high as ever and judges made much of the quality of cattle on display.

Local home bred Holstein Rettbar Outbound Roberta, a second calver owned by Tom Barrett from Tingewick in Buckingham, impressed judge Ben Yates with her ‘super udder’ and balanced confirmation.

Exhibited by Mr Barrett’s daughter Emily, the cow calved eight weeks ago and is giving 52 litres a day. The show was her first time out this year. The family milks 100 cows.

Reserve was Jersey Pierrepoint Bobs Truffle, a second calver owned by Zoe Clear of Farnham, Surrey.

The cow is one of 120 cows milked at the farm and is giving 30 litres a day. Miss Clear said the cow may go to the South West Dairy Show in October.

Aberdeen Angus bull Glympton Glespin was victorious in the beef inter-breed. It was the five year old home bred bull’s first time out on the show circuit this year.

Owned by Glympton Farms Ltd, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, Glympton Glespin is sired by Rawburn Rock Solid and was shown by stockman Niall Dallas.

In reserve was the Limousin heifer , Dinmore Istria, owned by Mike Dickens and family, from Little Horwood, Buckinghamshire.

By Hafodlas Cymro, she was bought as a yearling in Newark market from breeder, Paul Dawes, and was a prolific winner in the show ring last season. The 30 month heifer was shown by Joshua Jack.

In the sheep lines it was a two shear Charollais ram which took the top honours.

Owned by Geoff and Carol Watson of Kettering, Northamptonshire, the ram was also part of the winning group of three.

He was bought in and runs with 36 ewes.

In reserve was Thomas Blunt with his home bred Suffolk shearling ram. The ram runs with 28 ewes at the family farm in Newport Pagnell. He made up a group of three which took the reserve rosettes.
