Royal Welsh Show 2019: Offham pigs dominate at Royal Welsh

The pig inter-breed judging, which was brought forward on day three of the show in a bid to avoid the high temperatures later in the day, was dominated by Welsh pigs from Gussie Harmer of Messrs Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer, Lewes, East Sussex.

This was the first inter-breed success at the Royal Welsh for Messrs Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer, and they also scooped the newly established Phil Fowlie memorial pairs’ title.

The individual winner was Offham Theresa 32, a September 2018-born gilt, which had also won at Devon County show early in the showing season.

It went on to win the pairs title with its litter mate – a boar – Offham Ted 5, which took the inter-breed title at Royal Norfolk show this year.

This was the best result for Mr Ballard at the show on only his second visit.

Mr Ballard, who keeps about 60 pigs including Middle White, Large White, Landrace and Kune Kune, as well as 100 commercial ewes, will next be exhibiting at Pembrokeshire show.
