It was a first ever inter-breed win for the Lincoln Red’s at the Royal Welsh since the breed gained their own section at the show two years ago.

Donington Jessie from Edward Middleton’s Lincolnshire based herd took top honours, a February-2016 born heifer which was purchased from R.G. Parkinson, Louth.

No stranger to the show ring, it has taken several top titles this year including female champion at Woodhall Spa, reserve female at Nottinghamshire County and breed champion at Rutland and Driffield shows.

Judge Christine Williams, Shiffnal, said: “She had spark, was very correct with natural style. It was a tough call, but she was a very smart heifer whose presence in the ring tipped it for me.”

Inter-breed beef reserve and Limousin champion went to Grahams Melody from Robert and Jean Graham, Stirling. By Ampertaine Elgin and out of Milbrook Gingerspice.

It was shown by Drew Hyslop and his sister, Jennifer, and was exhibited at the Royal Welsh after recently taking the inter-breed beef reserve championship at the Great Yorkshire.

Joining the champion and reserve in the final four line-up was Simmental champion, Sterling Petra’s Cairo, from Paul and Judy Borlase, Stevenage. The seven-year-old cow was purchased for 7,000gns from the Sterling dispersal on behalf of the Hewlett family, Cheltenham, last year. A Dovefields Gallant daughter, it was shown with its March-2018 born bull calf at foot.

The Welsh Black champion, Tryfil Caleb, was another animal to be tapped out in the final four. From Geraint Jenkins, Tal-Y-Bont, it was purchased from Ioan Roberts, Dolgellau for 1,800gns three years ago and took the title on its first show outing this year.

Having made the 12-hour journey from Caithness was the British Blue champion, Graymar Hallie from the Manson family. Bred by Matthew Jones, Shropshire, the Empire D’ochain daughter was bought from him privately by the family for £4,500 three years ago and shown with its bull calf at foot.

Also involved in the judges final shortlist of eight was Charolais champion, Teme Magnolia, an April-2016 born heifer shown by Grace Corbett, Newtown. The exhibitor-bred animal is by Shraden Osram, and recently took breed championships at Anglesey and Oswestry shows.

In the commercial section, judge Colin Soutter, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, tapped out the British Blue cross Dream Girl as his overall champion.

A first time win in the commercial section for Anglesey based Aled Roberts and his father, Gwyn, two-year-old Dream Girl was bought by the pair from Ruthin Show Potentials in 2017 for 4,000gns after taking reserve champion on the day. By a British Blue and out of a Limousin cross, it was shown weighing 686kg.

In reserve was I Candy, a Limousin cross from the Edwards Brothers, Ruthin, making it their seventh reserve champion win in this class at the Royal Welsh.

The April-2017 born heifer was bought from Hexham in February 2018 for 1,550gns and already has several wins under its belt, coming second to the reserve champion at Beef Expo and the Royal Highland Show this year.

Champion baby beef in the commercial section went to Tecwyn Jones, Llanrwst, with November-2017 born Rambo. The exhibitor bred British Blue cross is by Lodgehamlet and took the title on its outing this season.

The junior heifer inter-breed title was taken by the Alford family, Cullompton, with Foxhillfarm Minesagin.

This Trueman Jagger daughter is out of Foxhillfarm Justtheone and took reserve breed champion in the Limousin section at the Royal Welsh the previous day as well as the Royal Highland Show this year.
