Senior cows head supreme line-up at Western Holstein spring show

With fewer entries on the year, the quality of stock forward at this year’s Western Holstein club spring show kept competition fierce. Alex Robinson reports.

Senior cows head supreme line-up at Western Holstein spring show

A CUMBRIAN-based exhibitor duo ensured their competition debut at the Western Holstein club spring show, held at Southview Equestrian Centre, Nantwich, was a winning one as they took the grand champion honours with a second calver.

April 2013-born December-calved Crossrigg Fremont Roxy, a Duckett-S A Fremont daughter, from F. Harrison and A. Jackson, Penrith, was shown yielding 40kg.

Roxy currently resides with Mr Jackson, who runs the 130-head Crossrigg herd in Penrith.

Classified VG 88, it is from 13 generations of VG/EX classified cows and was noted for its correctness and conformation by judge Brian Carscadden, Canada.

He said: “I was impressed with the winner’s youthfulness. The quality of competition was very high and my champion was the best in a show of super cows.”

Taking the reserve supreme spot was the mature class winner and reserve senior, the Scientific SS Dusk-sired Milliedale Dusk Rhapsody, owned by eight-year-old Millie Wardle, Derbyshire.

Gifted by her grandmother Yasmin Bradbury, this fourth calver was third at Dairy Expo in March, where its mother, the prolific show cow Peak Goldwyn Rhapsody, was a winner and stood overall grand champion.

Currently giving 45kg, it calved in December and is classified EX 94.

The heifer championship went to the Rivedane Holsteins from the Nutsford family, Middlewich, with the two-year-old Riverdane Aftershock Ashlyn.

Yielding 40kg and calved two months, it helped Riverdane clinch the award for the premier exhibitor in the show.

Coming in reserve was Garry and Izzy Jones, Shropshire, with their 2017 Dairy Expo winner, January 2015-born Clonpaddin Brokaw Fame. Bought from Ireland as a calf, it calved in January and is currently giving 30kg.

In the junior section, the baby calf winner Blydale Lynn Fitz All (PICTURED), owned jointly by Woodhey Dairy, Faddiley, Tom Lomas, of the TLC herd, Leek, and James Doherty and Stephanie Whittaker, of the Firstlook herd, Shrewsbury, was tapped out as champion.

By Toc-Farm Fitz and born in August 2016, it was bought from the Blydale herd two weeks previous and currently resides with the Knowlesmere herd in Shrewsbury.

The calf stood above the reserve choice, its yard mate Knowlesmere Doorman Starlight, owned by A. and J. Whittaker, Shrewsbury.

Out of Knowlesmere Gibson Starlight, a previous winner at the spring show, this seasoned senior calf also won its class at Dairy Expo.
