Sheep slaughtered and butchered in overnight attack

The incident happened overnight on Saturday (January 28) when the heavily pregnant sheep was targeted and killed in a so far unknown cause.

It was due to lamb in around two weeks.

Farmer Clare Duckworth, who farms the flock of 140 sheep in Blackburn, Lancashire, said she was worried because two of her sheep remained missing.

"It was not a pleasant thing," she said. "It is hard because we are not aware of the poor distress the sheep went through and we do not know the consequences of the attack on the other sheep.

"We found the carcase in the adjacent field to ours so the attacker must have chased them through the fence."

Ms Duckworth suspected the incident was not an isolated case after a Farm Watcher UK facebook post attracted comment suggesting knowledge of similar cases in Durham and Lincolnshire.

Widespread

She said she was concerned some of the rest of her flock may abort their lambs due to stress.

"It is surprising that incidents like this seem to be so widespread," she added.

"Every farmer works hard, especially up to the lambing period, but there is nothing you can do to stop something like this. I expect it was just an opportune."

Anyone with information is urged to call the police on 101.
