Maisie was junior female champion last year at the Royal Welsh Show and will now return home to become a breeding female in the 50-strong Sportsmans herd. Its sire, Barnsford Ferny was bought at Stirling in 2011 for 70,000gns.

Judge, Vicky Smith, Tiverton commented: “Maisie oozes quality and breed characteristics from head to tail. Today she moved slightly better and was fresher than my reserve champion, but they are two fabulous heifers.”

In reserve was the Limousin champion, Grahams Melody, by Ampertaine Elgin, a two-year-old heifer from Robert and Jean Graham, Stirling. Melody came to the Great Yorkshire after being placed first in its class at Drymen Show as well as being first in its class at Stirling show and the Royal Highland show earlier in the season.

Also pulled forward into the final line-up was the Highland champion, Merlin of Seam, bred and exhibited by S.B. Haley, Co. Durham. The yearling bull was shown with its mother as a calf, and was breed and native champion at Northumberland in May. Merlin will be sold at the Oban bull sales in February.

Another making the final line-up was the British Blue champion, Tanat Lola, an August 2016-born daughter of Tenace de la Praule from Wyn Jones, Ostwestry. The home-bred heifer was reserve breed champion at Stafford and Royal Cornwall Shows earlier in the year.

Another tapped forward was Foulness Ultra, by St Fort Rolex, the Lincoln Red champion from Robert Mawer, Woodall Spa. Bought privately from breeder, Chris Page, at nine months old, it was junior champion at the show last year.

The Hereford champion also made the final cut. This was Coley 1 Pilot, a January 2017-born son of Coley 1 Maverick owned and bred by Heather Whitaker, Halifax. Breed champion at the Royal Highland Show and male champion at Northumberland and Shropshire Shows, it will be will at the breed society sale in the autumn.

Taking the Beef Shorthorn championship for the second consecutive year at the breed society’s national show were Tracy and Mark Severn, Halifax. This year it was with their home-bred heifer, Highlee Kinder Rose by Podehole Elite. Already inter-breed champion at Todmorden Show this season, the January 2016-born heifer is in-calf to Millerston Jester, last year’s victor.

At the British Simmental Cattle Society Show the championship, as last year, went to Vikki and Jimmy Wood, Preston, this time with their home-bred March 2016-born heifer, Popes Rhona. The ET daughter of Kilbride Farm Comber and former Royal Highland Show inter-breed champion, Skerrington Rhona was junior champion at the show last year.
