Stiff competition at South West Scotland Dairy Show

TAKING the Holstein championship at the South West Scotland Dairy Show held at Castle Douglas was Colvend Atlas Rox from Steven and Tracey Roan, Dalbeattie.

The EX94-classified cow by MD-Delight Durham Atlas, calved at the start of August with its seventh and is giving 44kg a day. The cow is the seventh generation of excellent-classified cows from the Roxy family.

 

The Ayrshire championship went to West Mossgiel Miss Modern 28 exhibited by Richard Baynes, Hexham. The fifth-calved cow by West Mossgiel Aramis was bought from the Northern National Ayrshire sale in 2017 for 3,000gns from Stuart Gilliland, Castle Douglas, when it stood sale champion. Show 42 days fresh, the cow has given 57 tonnes lifetime to date.

Leading the Brown Swiss was an entry from Jonny Lochhead, Dumfries, this was Kedar Alino Carmen, which was also the champion exhibitor-bred Brown Swiss title. The three-year-old heifer by Steiners Tau Alino calved for the first time in May and has so far produced 4,455kg at 4.51 percent fat and 3.55 per cent protein.

 

Ali Cook, Lochmaben took the Jersey championship with Clydevalley Tequila Flora 2, a third-calved cow by Tower Vue Prime Tequila. Currently giving 42kg daily, the cow was bought privately from Robert Hunter, Lanarkshire, and since then was champion Jersey at Dumfries show in 2017 and second maiden heifer at UK Dairy Expo in 2015.
