Stock bull leads Mellguards Holstein dispersal at 4,100gns

The dispersal of the Mellguards herd of pedigree Holsteins on behalf F.M. and R. M. Fisher, Southwaite, Carlisle, attracted a big crowd to Borderway mart, Carlisle, with more than 600 cattle going home with 72 buyers.

Leading the trade overall at 4,100gns was one of the herd sires, Denmire Robuck by Gillette Windbrook bred from 12 generations of Ex or VG cows. Its dam is a top cow in the Denmire herd producing more than 100ton lifetime with numerous lactations over 16,500kgs. It went to volume buyers, B. and M.J. Nelson, Milnthorpe, Cumbria.

 

Cows peaked at 2,200gns for Mellguards Mel Jennifer VG88, a Nethanvale Mel daughter, fresh in her second and bred from three generations of Ex and VGs which went to an undisclosed buyer.

Mellguards Reddevil Joanne, anther second calver sold for 1,650gns as did Mellguards Bluesky Jennifer, a fresh third calve cow giving close to 40kgs, which went to H. and E.M. Hunter and Son, Berrier Head, Penrith.

 

The milking heifers topped at 1,600gns for Mellguards Bossman Dorothy, the highest yielding heifer in the sale giving almost 40kgs which sold to A.J. Knowles, Higher Park Head, Preston.

There was a brisk trade for all ages of young-stock starting with the in-calf heifers. They topped at 1,150gns for Mellguards Regent Daisy by Warnelview Regent and bred from a high producing dam who gave almost 100ton lifetime, which went to Messrs Nelson.

 

The group of 42 heifers running with the bull and mostly due from mid-summer averaged £674 and topped at 900gns for Mellguards Reddevil Sue selling to R. Hares, Cheshire.

The 60 bulling heifers sold to a joint top price of 650gns. The youngest heifer in the section being one of them, Mellguards Goldbull Olga by Willem’s Hoeve W-H-R Gold Bull and bred from the Olga cow family. The buyer was A. and J.M. Foster, Wigton, Cumbria.

 

The 28 young heifer calves born in 2016 topped at 400gns for Mellguards Roebuck Francis by Denmire Roebuck.

 

Averages - 188 cows in-milk or dry, £925.50; 92 heifers in-milk or dry, £1083.09; 37 freshly calved heifers, £1137.97; 36 in-calf heifers, £982.33; 42 heifers running with bull, £674.50; 60 bulling heifers, £582.57; 79 heifers 6-12 months old, £483.39; 66 heifers 3-6months old, £373.86; 37 heifer calves born 2016, £282.93;

2 bulls, £3,255.
