Stolen tractor used to ram raid cash machine at petrol station #RuralCrime

The Jet Petrol Station, on Newark Road in Lincolnshire was targeted in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, December 16.

Staff were first alerted to the incident when they arrived at work at 5.30am and were greeted by a police officer who had spotted something strange on his routine checks.

Manager Muneer Fareed then received a phone call from his staff about the incident and he raced to the scene.

He told Lincolnshire Live: "It happened at around 3am this morning and the first thing we knew about it was when the member of staff arrived on the early shift at 5.30am to a police officer already on the scene.

"I got a call just after 5.30am so I had to come down to the petrol station. The manager is actually away on holiday at the moment so I’m only here to fill in for him.

"We still don’t know if they managed to take any money, we’ll have to get the card company to come out to investigate further and try to get it back up and running if it can be fixed.

"This is the first time this has happened to us, and it was a bit of a shock.

"I’ve had to be here today to help the police, I’m just glad that they didn’t manage to take the cash machine."

The owner of the tractor, which was stolen and used in the ram raid, David Hustler said he was just glad to get it back.

He said: "The first thing that I knew about the tractor being stolen was when the police called me, it was obviously taken from the farm some time over night.

"It has been left with a broken window, no doubt they smashed it doing whatever they were doing. The tractor was at Haddington which is about three miles away.

"I’m just glad that I’ve got it back that’s the main thing, hopefully the police will be able to catch them."

Rural crime skyrockets

In July, the police’s national head of rural crime admitted forces have been struggling to answer the phone as law-breaking in the countryside skyrocketed.

Dave Jones, who represents all the chief constables in the UK, made the comments at the launch of a new NFU report which revealed serious failings in the way police treat rural crime, despite it costing farmers £42.5 million a year.

More than 1,000 rural police stations closed between 2000 and 2012 as farmers and their families became victims of arson, vandalism and burglary. Many others reported experiencing fear, intimidation and threats of violence.
