Strong demand and averages up at Wales and Border ram sale

Averages across the board were generally higher than 12 months ago, with an overall sale figure of £510.45, compared to £487.01 last year and £480.26 in 2012, with a clearance rate of 88 per cent.

Bluefaced Leicester ram lambs finished more than £70 up, with shearlings £48 higher. Suffolk ram lambs were up by £51, Beltex by £77, Texel shearlings by £59 and ram lambs by £70.

 

The sale’s highest bid was for a shearling bred by Andrew Reed, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, who also took the top price in 2011.

 

This year his pen of 27 averaged £1,600 per head.

 

The ram, a son of Caereinion Rocket, was bought by three Lanarkshire neighbours, led by Allan Wight, Crawford, and will be used in their Midlock, Hartside and Burnhead flocks.

Yearling

Another Texel bred by Cefin Pryce, Llanfair Caereinion, Powys, made 4,600gns.The yearling, by Caereinion Number One, was one of his entry of 10 which averaged about £1,500.  

 

A Charollais shearling bred by Meilir Jones, Ruthin, sold for 3,300gns and was one of a batch of 17 he sold, averaging £950. The buyer was Huw Roberts, Ruthin. Arwyn and Jane Thomas, Whitland, sold a Charollais ram lamb for 3,000gns.

 

A Talybont Welsh Mountain bred by Rob and Llinos Jones, Builth Wells, sold to Julian Rees, Crickhowell, Powys, for 3,000gns.

 

Other leading prices included a Bluefaced Leicester ram lamb, bred by Aled Jones Tal y Cafn, Conwy, at 3,000gns.

 

A non maedi visna Suffolk sold for 1,850gns to G. Davies and Co, Llanfechan, Garth, Powys. It was bred by D.T. and S.M. Owens, Leominster, Herefordshire.

 

A Blue Texel bred by David Alexander, Galston, Ayrshire, sold for 1,700gns.
