A tremendous entry of almost 3,000 sheep were penned at Monmouthshire livestock market for the Farmers Guardian-supported show and sale of breeding sheep.
Most were shearling ewes which peaked at £185/head for the champion pen of Suffolk cross North Country Mules from J.P. Sevenoaks and Sons, Walterstone, selling to Ken Jones, Usk.
The same vendors also sold other pens of Suffolk Mules at £185/head and £182/head. G.W. and F.M. Jones, Llanfabon, sold Texel yearlings at £182/head. G.G. Chandler and Son, Abergavenny, topped at £180/head again for Suffolk Mules with Welsh Mules at £170/head. C. Hinksman, Marshfield, Cardiff, sold a run of Texel cross Mules to £168/head.
A small entry of flock ewes met a lively trade, topping at £123/head for Texels from J. Pike, Corwen, Newport. Full mouthed ewes sold to £102/head with others at £100.
The 238 ewe lambs on offer saw a top price of £99/head for Suffolk Mules from J. Griffiths, Bassaleg.
Suffolk ewe lambs from R.T. Watkins, Abergavenny, sold at £95, £90 and £87/head with North Country Mules to £76/head and Welsh Mules to £79/head. Texel ewe lambs peaked at £76, Suffolk wether lambs at £74 and Texel ram lambs at £71.50/head.
Breeding rams sold to £630 for Texel yearlings from both J.R. Joseph and Co, Brecon, and W.R. Watkins and Sons, Hereford. Suffolk yearlings sold to £473/head and Charollais yearlings to £420/head.
Most of the ram lambs were Charollais, with a pen from T.L. Prichard, Pontyclun, selling to £420/head.
