With sheep entries standing at 780 and cattle at 270, numbers were up at this year’s Staffordshire County show.
The sheep sheds were at capacity and the hotly contested inter-breed title went to a Suffolk shearling ewe from Phil, Jill and Russel Poole who runs the Salopian flock at Battlefield, Shrewsbury.
The ewe, shown by shepherd Stuart Davis, was bought as a ewe lamb from the Stockton flock dispersal sale, and took the top title at Stafford on the Poole’s first time exhibiting at the show.
Next stop for the Poole’s and the ewe will be the Three Counties show.
Runner-up in the sheep judging was a Rough Fell tup, from 12-year-old Thomas Moore, Fradswell, Stafford.
This was the first time out for the home-bred tup, and also marks Thomas’ first foray into the show circuit.
In the cattle lines, the beef inter-breed went to a four-year-old Simmental cow, Kennox Diva’s Gena, from David Donnelly, Ashbourne.
No stranger to the showrings at Stafford, Dena was inter-breed champion at last year’s show.
This time she was shown with her December 2018-born bull calf at foot, and is back in-calf with her third.
She will head to the Royal Norfolk, Great Yorkshire, and Ashbourne shows later this summer.
She beat the 2017 inter-breed winner into reserve place. This was the Hereford cow, Dendor 1 Jennefer 15, from Boomer Birch and Graham Brindley, Stafford.
Purchased from the Jones family, Powys, in 2013 as a maiden heifer, this cow has gone on to take Hereford female of the year twice. She next be shown at the Royal Highland show.
At just two weeks calved, with twins, the second calved Dairy Shorthorn cow, Burbrook Jinnys Meg, took the overall dairy title for owner Richard Harper, Burland, Nantwich.
Shown giving 54kg daily this cow is part of Mr Harper’s 100-cow milking herd, which includes 40 pedigree Shorthorns.
She will go on to be shown at the breed’s national show at the Royal Cheshire show later this month.
Runner-up was a seventh calved Ayrshire, Bigginvale Apple Blossom 11, from Robert and Jennifer Adams, Ashbourne.
Calved just over two months ago she was shown giving 44kg, and is part of the Adams family’s 140-strong herd.
She was last in the show ring as a fourth calver when she took the championship at Ashbourne show.
The pig champion was a Berkshire sow, Maerose Excelsa, from Chris and Julie Hudson, Newark. Her grandmother was champion at Stafford three years ago. This year’s winner, which has had five litters, will head to Lincoln, Royal Norfolk, and the Great Yorkshire.
Reserve was a Duroc gilt, Spring Nancy, from Matthew Holtom, Merdien, who was showing Durocs for the first time after getting involved in the breed 12 months ago. Mr Holtom also has Welsh and Berkshires and keeps six sows.
