A Swaledale ewe led the record entry of just over 450 sheep at this year’s Garstang show.
The winner, a shearling, is part of John Walker’s 1,300 Swaledale flock run at Dunsop Bridge, Lancashire.
It was shown as gimmer lamb at last year’s Garstang show where it picked up a first prize rosette, and was being shown for the first time this year.
The Walker family will next be taking sheep to Hodder Valley show.
Reserve in the sheep section was a Mule gimmer shearling shown by Chris Hewitt, Bentham.
The gimmer was bought from breeders Kilnstown Farm, Bewcastle, at a Carlisle sale.
It has previously been shown at Penrith and Agri Expo, where it picked up rosettes for Mr Hewitt, who sells about 100 Mule shearlings a year at Bentham mart.
The beef inter-breed, judged by the panel of breed judges plus a member of the public plucked from the beef ring spectators, saw top honours got to the Parthenaise heifer, Killerwick Nova, from James Duerden, Dalton-in-Furness.
The heifer, which was also awarded the exhibitor-bred title, has already taken inter-breed titles at Penrith, and Ulverston and Lonsdale shows for Mr Duerden, who has a herd of 20 breeding females and followers farmed at Dalton in Furness.
Nova is by French sire, Faussett, and out of Fillette, and is in-calf to Killerwick Lancelot.
Reserve overall, and reserve exhibitor bred, was a Limousin cow and calf outfit from Nicola Chappelhow and Michael Morley, Penrith who keep 20 Limousins alongside an arable and dairy business.
The February 2013-born cow, High Grounds Isabella, is by Fieldsons Alfy, and was shown with her May-born heifer calf at foot. The cow and calf took the breed title at Penrith show, and will next be shown at Westmoreland show.
In the dairy rings a Holstein fifth calver, Bilsrow Grafeeti Olympia, from James Tomlinson, Preston was tapped out as the overall winner.
This was the third consecutive year this EX95 cow had won at Garstang show, and she also picked up the inter-breed title at Westmoreland show in 2018, a show she is also destined for this year.
The dairy judge, Alan Timbrell, Gloucestershire, praised his champion for its beautifully veined udder, and said it had the best udder in the Holstein classes.
Following closely in reserve was a Jersey third calver, Katherines Jenny Ontime, which was shown by Katherine Jenkinson who keeps 30 Jerseys alongside her family’s 120-strong herd. This was the first time at the show for the Jenkinson family, who are originally from Garstang, but now farm at Carlisle.
Katherines Jenny Ontime, calved in May, and was shown giving 30kg. She will also be heading to Westmoreland show next.
