The Western Holstein Club Spring show, held at Wettenhall, Cheshire saw class sizes slightly smaller than previous years, due largely to bTB restrictions, nevertheless, quality of competition was high. Hannah Noble reports.

Third-calver wins at Western Holstein Club spring show

The overall championship was awarded to the winner of the four-year-old class, Aliann Mincio Kitty, a Bertaiola Mincio daughter from John and Andrew Holgate, Settle.

Classified EX91, backed by ten generations of VG and EX, Kitty was two months fresh with her third calf and giving 65kg daily, also took the award for best udder in show.

Commenting on his final placings, the judge, Giuseppe Beltramino from Italy said: “My champion is so correct, she has no functional faults. She is all about dairy strength and carries a beautiful udder.”

Taking the title of reserve overall champion as well as being awarded intermediate champion, was a Farnear-TBR-BH Cashmoney daughter, Lillyhall Cashmoney Bonita, owned by Whinhill, Icow and Huddlesford Holsteins. Currently giving 40kg daily, this was her first show after being bought as a calf at the Black and White sale, Carlisle in 2015 for 1,700gns.

The syndicate hope to exhibit the heifer this summer at the Royal Highland Show as well as some local shows.

Reserve intermediate champion was awarded to Knowlesmere Solomon Diamond, a Walnutlawn Solomon daughter from Andrew and Jane Whittaker, Shrewsbury.

She calved for the first time at the start of January and is currently giving 40kg daily. She also took the title of junior champion at UK Dairy Expo in 2017. Her dam, Knowlesmere Jordan Diamond is classified EX96 and placed reserve champion at Dairy Expo 2018.
