Third Malvern interbreed win for Herefordshire Limousin herd at Royal Three Counties Show

Barry Alston reports from the livestock lines at the Royal Three Counties Show.

A Herefordshire Limousin herd made it a remarkable three Malvern interbreed beef championships in a row, a pair of Gloucesters led a keenly contested Burke Trophy dairy line-up, while minority breeds also dominated the main sheep awards.

Having to place 15 breeds to find the show’s overall beef champion was no easy task for locally based interbreed judge, Gerald Blandford – but with Trueman Grazio, a five-year-old Irish-bred cow, complete with her latest calf, circling the ring anything but another victory for Paul Dawes’s Dinmore herd would have been hard to overlook.

The fact that she is the mother of Trueman Jagger, the 140,000 gns world record priced Limousin bull, made it even more difficult.

For his reserve champion Mr Blandford opted for the best of the Herefords, the home bred four-year-old Coley 1 Bubbles, from Halifax, Yorkshire-based Heather Whittaker.

Neither, however, figured as part of the top placed pair in the coveted RASE Burke Trophy beef breeds line-up staged this year as part of the show.

That slot went to two striking Charolais, the male breed leader Maerdy Flambeau from the Towcester, Northampton-based Donger family, teamed with the female champion, Balbithan Iona, from the White family, Swanage, Dorset.

Dinmore Limousins did put together the reserve placed pair with Grazio being partnered with the seven-year-old Diamant, one of the herd’s stock bulls.

Dairy

Malvern remains one of the few major shows to stage separate breed classes for dual purpose breeds and it was among them that Jim Westaway, found his Burke Trophy dairy champions.

At the expense of the pure dairy breeds his choice was for an outstanding and perfectly matched Gloucester duo – Oaklands Gretel , a home bred four-year-old cow from Nicola O’Connell, Monkwood , Hampshire, and the three-year-old heifer, Dymock Isla from the Phillips family, Newent.

The more traditional dairy breeds also failed to take the reserve place. That went to the Red Polls, represented by a home bred heifer from Helen Arthan, Malpas, Cheshire, and a four-year-old cow from Blunt Farming, Milton Keynes.

In the pure dairy interbreed ring the Holstein champion, Panda April Fools Gold from Panda Holsteins, Chulmleigh, Devon, had the edge over the Jersey leader, Rapid Bay UK Cameo, from the mother and daughter team of Victoria and June Dimond, Dorset.

Sheep

Irishman Victor Chestnut also rang the changes in the interbreed sheep rings with the usually favoured Continental breeds out of the picture.

First of all he gave the terminal sire title to a home bred two-year-old Rouge ewe from well-known Worcestershire exhibitor, Percy Tait, with the Suffolk breed leader, a yearling ewe from W.H. Sinnett and Sons, Stockton, Worcester, as runner-up.

Leading the non-terminal breeds was a Clun Forest yearling ewe from Brecon’s I.T. Davies and Sons, with a Percy Tait Bleu du Maine yearling ram next in line.

The final reckoning saw the Rouge taking the top rosette with the Suffolk reserve.

Pigs

In the pig rings supreme judging brought a repeat of the Bath and West placing for Bristol-based James Sage and his Blewett Precious Hampshire breeding line.

His August 2015-born gilt beat the best of the traditional breeds -- Finnington Matilda, a Large Black gilt from Jack Holroyd, Preston, Lancashire.

Runner-up among the traditionals was Catrin Mary 4, a British Lop gilt from Crown Farm Meats, Raglan, Gwent, who also had the reserve modern placing with the Large White boar, Dukes Champion Boy.

An E3L Texel from Phil and Carol Houldey, Hasfield, Gloucestershire, topped the lamb carcases, with an E3L Beltex from the Blandford family, Ledbury, reserve.
