Top honours for Bluefaced Leicester at Penrith

It was a repeat on last year’s top line-up in the sheep rings at Penrith Show, with champion and reserve going to a traditional type Bluefaced Leicester and Charollais as in 2017.

For the second year running, Scott and Claire Thomason, Walney Island, had top honours with a traditional type Bluefaced Leicester ram.

They took the title at Penrith this year with a two-year-old, bought from Kelso Ram Sales last year as a shearling. Bred by Alan McClymont, Selkirk, its full brother took the breed championship at the Royal Welsh Show the previous week and its sire has taken the same title at the Royal Highland twice.

In reserve was the Charollais champion, a shearling ewe from Jonathan Aiken, Hesket Newmarket. The Werafawr Prospect daughter took the reserve breed championship at the Royal Highland this year as well as titles several of Mr Aiken’s local shows, including Skelton, on its last outing this season.

In the cattle section, beef inter-breed went to Messrs Jenkinson Farms, Clifton, with their fifth calver Whinfellpark Glittered. Led by Craig Douglas, the homebred Wilodge Cerberus daughter was shown with its heifer calf, Whinfellpark Orchid at foot.

On its first outing this year, it took the champion of champions at Penrith in 2016 as well as taking the breed championship title at the Royal Highland show, Cockermouth and Westmorland in the same year.

In reserve was last year’s beef championship winner, Neil Slack, Penrith, with his British Blue cross heifer, Bootilicous.

Taking the commercial championship this year, the 18-month old Tweeddale Ebony daughter has already taken commercial championships at Nottinghamshire and Northumberland shows, as well as reserve at Cumberland and Cockermouth shows.

A Holstein from the Wilson family, Penrith, took top honours in the dairy rings with their fifth calver Stowbeck Lauthority Trix. The EX95 Comestar Lauthority daughter was shown fresh in April, giving 55kg on its first outing this year and resides with the families 400 pedigree Holstein herd.

Judge Helen Herd, Skipton, commented on its power and style in the ring which gave it the edge, adding that it was a fantastic example of the breed.

In reserve was the Jersey, Heathwaite Ontime Anna, from Katherine Jenkinson, Scalby. The four-year-old second calver was shown yielding 20kg, having last calved in May.

This Lenquest Ontime daughter has previously taken breed championships at Cumberland and Skelton shows and will be heading to Dalton and Westmorland next.
