Top Tory MEP tells people to ‘stop moaning’ about chlorinated chicken

He made the remarks as part of a series of tweets which suggested US chlorinated chicken was safe to eat and those who opposed its entry to the UK were ‘xenophobes’ and ‘Luddites’.

The leading Brexiteer has previously spoken at NFU conference to try to persuade farmers to vote to leave the EU.

Twitter users responded angrily to his remarks, with some suggesting imports would put UK poultry farmers out of business.

Others claimed US hygiene standards fell short of what is currently required in Britain and pointed out accepting American standards could affect farmers’ ability to export to the EU.

Mr Hannan’s comments came as a new House of Lords committee report warned an increase in imports from countries operating lower farm animal welfare standards could put UK producers at a competitive disadvantage after Brexit.

The peers found consumers were not always aware of the difference between production systems or willing to pay a higher price for premium welfare products.
