UK single market key concern for Welsh Conservatives

Trade inside the UK single market took centre stage at the Welsh Conservatives’ spring conference last week, according to the party’s leader Andrew Davies.

UK single market key concern for Welsh Conservatives

Following the Prime Minister’s pledge at the conference to strengthen the ‘precious, precious union’, Mr Davies told Farmers Guardian agriculture in all nations of the UK would be damaged if Scotland were to become independent and remain a member of the EU.

“It is easy to forget in agricultural terms we trade with unfettered access to Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales”, he said.

“What the SNP are talking about could potentially create barriers which would be harmful to Scottish agriculture and the rest of the UK’s agriculture.”

England-centric

Farmers’ Union of Wales president Glyn Roberts used his speech at the conference to hammer home the importance of Welsh farming and said the FUW would not accept an ‘England-centric’ agricultural policy.

Responding to his concerns, Mr Davies said there would have to be a UK agricultural framework when Britain leaves the EU.

“Similar to what we have at the moment with a Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for Europe, what is required is a CAP for the UK, with the ability for the devolved Governments, and indeed the UK Government when it comes to England, to be able to fine tune the overall narrative of that policy to meet local conditions and requirements”, he added.
