Budweiser looks to drive towards 100% British barley in 2018

Budweiser were looking to push on towards sourcing 100 per cent of its barley for its UK beer from the UK.

While it could not put a target date on when it would achieve 100 per cent, over 50 per cent of barley in British-brewed Budweiser was UK sourced for its South Wales and Lancashire breweries.

AB InBev’s SmartBarley programme started in 2014 with eight farmers and now has 150 farmers. It has given opportunities for former milling wheat growers struggling against blackgrass to switch to malting barley.

Strong year

Rowan Chidgey, SmartBarley UK marketing manager, said it had been another strong year for Budweiser.

“Brewing and farming are intrinsically linked, so we are really pleased with the growth of our SmartBarley programme in 2017.

“Budweiser – the King of Beers – is a major global brand but we wouldn’t be able to brew it here without the enormous contribution of local farmers, who now have a way to manage pervasive weeds, such as blackgrass, with a profitable crop that goes into our growing portfolio of beers.

“With the launch of Bud Light earlier this year and the rollout of alcohol-free Budweiser Prohibition in 2018, we are looking forward to working with more British growers and moving towards sourcing 100 per cent of our barley from UK farms.”
