Warnings about dry cow product

Dairy farmers in Denmark have seen a number of ‘adverse’ side effects to the drying off product Valactis.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) have been made aware of reports of cows being unable to stand, and in some cases this has led to premature death, following use of the product.

Most of the side effects seen so far occurred within eight to 24 hours following administration of the product. Anecdotal evidence suggests hypocalcaemia treatments may be successful in reversing clinical signs.

The prescription only veterinary medicine was first sold in the UK in April 2016.

CEVA Sante Animale, who market the product, have decided to voluntarily stop further distribution of the product in Europe pending the outcome of further investigations.

UK vets and dairy farmers are being urged to report any side effects associated with use of Velactis to the VMD.
