Welshpool Texels 6,200gns centre record

Saturday’s Welsh National Texel Sale, Welshpool, saw a flying demand for ram lambs and shearling ewes.

A new centre record for the breed of 6,200gns, was achieved and 82 per cent of ram lambs changed hands in this Farmers Guardian supported sale.

Sale topper was the male

Sale topper was the male and reserve overall champion from Richard Wilson, Appleby. Eden Valley Whizz Kid is a son of the 11,000gns Sportsmans Tremendous II and out of a dam by the breed record-holding 220,000gns Deveronvale Perfection. Selling with an index of 289, it was bought by Will and Liz McCaffrey for the Scholars flock, Malpas.

 

 

Second best call

Second best call of the sale was a 3,100gns for Crieff breeder Robert Cockburn’s Knap Waverly. This second prize winner is by Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold and out of a Baltier Rascal-sired dam. It to G.W. Williams, Llanrwst, Conwy.

 

 

 

Roy Hughes, Trefonen, Oswestry, paid 1,700gns for Rocester breeder Ben Vernon’s Tullylagan Tonka son Charben Winne.

 

Leading shearling ram trade at 3,200gns was the first prize entry from Cefyn Pryce, Llanfair Caerinion at 3,200gns. This son of Caereinion U R The One is out of a Caereinion Number One-sired dam. It was purchased by Richard Lewis, Karven, Haverfordwest.

 

Making 2,800gns was Wollascott Vermount from S.P. and C.P. Williams, Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury, and sold to an undisclosed buyer.

There was a tremendous trade for shearling ewes which sold to 5,500gns for the sale’s overall champion Robert Pierce’s Oldford flock, Chester. This Sportsmans Tremendous II daughter is out of a Mullan Supremacy-sired dam. It was purchased by Richard Lewis for Codd and Lewis, Treffgarne, Havorfordwest.

 

 

Second best at 4,400gns

Second best at 4,400gns was the Haverfordwest-based Reed family’s fifth prize winner from their Scolton flock which sold to an undisclosed buyer. It is a daughter of Whitehart Ultra out of a dam by Caereinion Rocket.

 

 

 

AVERAGES

108 ram lambs, £623.78; 27 shearling rams, £1,079.17; 84 shearling ewes, £638.13.
