Rare quintuplet lambs born on Cumbria sheep farm #sheep365

The five Jacob lambs were born early Saturday morning (February 10) with the help of sheep farmer Paul Holmes and his girlfriend Sarah Kendall, on their farm in Low Hesket, Cumbria, at the top of Eden Valley.

Mr Holmes said his ewe had lambed several times before – including birthing quadruplets last year – but according to the scan was this time only expecting triplets.

“We have had a few fours before but never a five,” he said. “My cousin scanned her and said, ‘Oh there is a few’, but we were only expecting three.

“It was quite funny because my girlfriend came down and I was just giving a hand with the second and third lamb. I then said about going back for a fourth and fifth and I think she thought I was joking!”

Mr Holmes said he never expects to see a ewe lamb quintuplets again.

Each of the five lambs are doing well but Mr Holmes said he will start adopting them onto other ewes in the next few days.

Lambing for the couple started on Thursday (February 8) but they are hoping to get wrapped up as soon as possible so Mr Holmes can start work contract lambing.

‘I have never seen five before’

The pair have 80 ewes to lamb this year from their flock of North County Cheviot sheep, Jacob sheep and Herdwicks.

Mr Holmes added: “Mum will probably just keep the two.

“With her having a difficult lambing she is just that bit under the weather. But all the lambs are up and about.

“I do not think we will ever have five again – quads are common to see in Jacobs but I have never seen five before.”
